The Wellington Resident Magistrate.
Wa recently referred to the action of Mr W. C. Buchanan in Parliament, when he endeavored to induce the Minister for Justice to increase the salary of Mr Wardell, now Resident Magistrate at Wellington, but for many years holding a similar position in the Wuirarapa district. Mr Buchanan failed iu his generous effort, but t he was none the less right to make it. On this subject the Evening Post remarks ; —“ Mr Wardell is an officer of far longer service than any of the Resident Magistrates who are paid higher salaries, and we believe the duties he has to discharge are, despite the figures quoted, quite as important and arduous as those of any Resident Magistrate in the colony. The admirable manner iu which he discharges them is well known, and wo certainly think that he should, in the matter of salary, be placed on an equality with the magistrates of other chief towns. It is certainly not fair that he should be paid loss than his predeces sor, who was much bis junior in the service.”
