To-morrow, at his Carterton auction rooms, Mr F. H Wood will sell a quantity of general merchandise.

The programme for the entertainment next Monday night at the Town Hall is published in our advertising columns. The weather has been most inclement all over the colony.

The weather during the early part of this week was wretchedly wet and cold, with showers of hail and even a little snow, putting a stop to all outside operations on the farm and in the garden. The close of this month will be welcomed by everybody with a change to warmer and more settled weather.

A Good Account.—" To sum it up, six long years of bed-ridden sickness and suffering, costing £lO per year, total £240, all of which was stopped by three bottles of American Go's Hop Bitters taken bj my wife, who has done her own housework for a year since without the loss of a day, and I want everybody to know it for their benefit.”-John Weeks, Butler. The Greytown Borough Council have passed a resolution empowering their ranger to impound cattle, horses, <fco., which may be found on all unfenced lands within the Borough. This includes all private streets. There is a feeling extant that the Council have no power to take cattle off private streets, that their action in instructing their ranger to do so is ultra ri'res. Anyhow the resolution passed at the last sitting of the Corpora* tion will give persons interested an opportunity to test the question in a court of law if so deposed. In reference to Cr Cotter’s motion re metalling five chains of road near Mr Tioehurst’s house, “ Hastwell Street ” should read " Hitsohberg Street " in out last issue.

The Telegraph says : —Tire revenne of th e Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club from the totalise' tor last year amounted to £2534 16s, as against some £I3OO the previous year, an enormous advance, and proving conclusively that the depression affected Hawke’s Bay but slightly.

Moral Turpitude.—Blame attaches to a jury of intelligent men when they condemn a man for crime whose moral nature has been perverted by indigestion, diseased liver and kidneys. A thoughtful judge may well consider whether society would not be better served by ordering a bottle of American Co’s Hop Bitters for the unfortunate in the dock instead of years of penal servitude. The appearance of Pahiatua would be gieiitly altered for the better if tbo bush so close to the town was cut down, A range of hills runs along close to the back of the township, and if the hush leading up to this were removed, a more pleasant view could net he imagined. Besides adding to the beauty of the town it would undoubtedly increase the value of property around it ; hut there is still another reason why this hush should come down, and that is the danger of fire, for with a very dry season it is likely to be a source of very great trouble. We do not wish to see such scenes here as occurred at Stratford last summer, and therefore hope those living very near the bush will at any rate see to tbeir own safety. Had the Stratford people antioipated auy danger from tire they would have made preparation ; and our position is somewhat similar to theirs, but with this difference—we have their experience to guide us.—Pahiatua Star.

From (he fact that the clothes were taken from different parts of the shop, and were all of one size, it is surmised that the thief intends them for his own use. Mrs Eva McCullum, of North Shore, Auckland, was seized with a tainting fit and died suddenly. Like most other public bodies, the Featberston Town Board cannot please everyone ; and {if complaint continues to prevail we hear |that some of the members think seriously of resigning so as to give a chance to those who are dissatisfied with their actions to go in and try to do better. The members of the present Board are men of much experience in public matters, and it is a debatable question as to whether they can be replaced by men of superior wisdom. The African Boxthoru makes a spleneid hedge and those persons who have planted it in the Wairarapa are more than satisfied with it. Those who may be in want of seed can be supplied by Mr Barratt, of Moroa. The Ifortnightly meeting of the Land Board was held yesterday morning. The Under Secretary for Crown Lands wrote stating that the Railway Department objected to the small sections at Cross’ Creek being sold, as the employes might have to be removed.
