Greytown Borough Council.

This Council held its usual monthly ( meeting at the Borough Chambers on Monday night. Present—Hi* Worship the Mayor (P. H. Wood. Esq.)) in the chair, and Crs Cotter, Maxton, Armstrong, St George, Varobam, Jones, Dr Smith and Cameron. CoBBBSrONDBNCB INWABDB, From Returning Officer, announcing the election of Dr Smith to the extraordinary vacancy caused by the resignation of Ct Humphries. The Town Clerk apologised to the Council for failing to attend as Returning Officer on the day first appointed for taking nominations of candidates to supply the extraordinary vacancy for one member; he informed the Council that it was an oversight on his park The Mayor said he heartily welcomed Dr Smith back to the Council table. Dr Smith had occupied the position of Councillor and also Mayor seme years ago. He considered that the Dr would be a valuable acquisition to the corporation as, on account of his travels, he would come back to them fully charged with information. Dr J. Smith then took the necessary obligations as a Councillor. Cr Smith thanked the Mayor and Council for the kind expressions, and said he should always endeavor to do his duty, and he hoped they would work as harmoniously together as in days gone by. A letter was read from the Treasury Department, advising the return to the credit of Council of L4O auctioneer’s license. The Clerk read the correspondence out* wards, the substance of which appeared in the former report. Prom Mr J. O’Connor, protesting against the poundage by the ranger of his horse. The action of the ranger was upheld by the Council. From Natives at Papawai, asking for L 25 compensation for use of road. Cr Cotter moved, and Cr Armstrong seconded, that no notice be taken of the letter. Carried. In reference to the ranger, the Mayor said that perhaps be might in some matters use a little more of the spirit of oonoilation,he did not wish to complain or say that the ranger exceeded his duties, but he considered that be followed more the letter of the law in some case than the spirit of it. Kcbatiwhiti Street. Messrs 0. Mortis and H. Hawke waited upon the Council re the monies due to them for work done on Enritiwhiti road. Mr Morris informed the Council that the Inspector had expressed himself satisfied that the work was completed according to the specifications. The Inspector said that at present the uniform curve at the side required by the specifications was not there ; the side had sunk in several places since the work was completed. Cr Jones said that from what he could see, the specifications had bees most faithfully carried out. Cr Cotter ; Do I understand that the Inspector has said that the work was done according to specifications ? The Inspector said Mr Skeet would not pass the work because the ditch had sunk; he though it had been an oversight of Mr Sheet's in not going down to look at the work before. Cr Cotter said it was only right that the contractors should get their money. The Inspector must not be too thinskinned. The Mayor said it might be the fanlt of the party who drew up the specifications. If the Inspector was satisfied the work was completed according to specifications, the money must be paid. The Mayor moved that the money be paid. Seconded by Cr St George and carried unanimously. Wobks Committee. The Works Committees’ report was read, and, upon the motion of .Cr Cameron, seconded by Cr Maxton, adopted. Finance Committee. The Finance Committee reported a balance of L 67 19s lOd, and recommended that all rates owing tor two years be sued for without further notice. On the motion of Cr Varnbam, seconded by Ct Armstrong, the report was adopted. POUNDINO OF* UnFENOED LAND. Or St George moved the resolution, notice of which he gave at the former meeting, to the effect that the ranger be empowered to impound cattle from all unfenoed land within the precincts of the Borough. Cr Jones seconded, and the resolution was carried. Lamps. Cr St George said that the residents were agitating for another lamp opposite Mrs Hastwell’s house. Cr Dr Smith gave notice that be wonld move at the next meeting that twelve sddU tional lamps be erected iu the Borough. Cottonwood and Sobcb. Cr Cotter asked the Clerk to read the minutes of two mouths’ prior, relating to the clearing of the cottonwood, Ac., on Jackson's road ; he said it was, since out, a great obstruction to traffic, and he thought the burning should have been done at the same time. The Clerk read the minutes in reference therto, but no burning was specified. Meialuno and Repaibino Streets. Cr Cotter said that there were many residents in Cotter street complaining of the state of their road, He moved that eight chains of metalling required, more or less, be done and tenders called for. Seconded by Cr St George and carried. Cr Cotter moved that five chains of metalling be done on Hastwell street. Seconded by Cr Varnham. Cr St George moved, as an amendmen, that the street be formed and metalled only as far as Mr Tioehurst’s g*te, or a footpath be made it he requires it. Seconded by Cr Jones. Cr Cotter consented to withdraw his motion in favor of the amendment, which was adopted. Feeding in the Pound.

Cr Yaruham asked tbe Mayor what provision was made for feeding cattle iu the pound. The Clerk referred to the Impounding Act and announced that it was la 64 per diem for every bead of mature cattle. PoWHATA BRinOK. Cr Varnham wished to know when the contractor was likely to proceed with the bridge and fencing ; the contributors were now anxiously eminiriug. Cr Cameron moved that the contractor be requested to proceed with the bridge and fencing at once. Seconded by Cr Varnham and carried. Breaking Stones Cr Yaruham moved that the Overseer get men seeking work to break stoues at a cost uot exceeding 2s Ud per yard. Agreed to. Humphries Street. Cr Cameron mentioned that the work on Humphries street had uot yet been proceeded with. Before retiring Cr Jones said he had intended to ask for n lamp near Wyett’s bridge if Cr Smi'h had uot given bis notice of motion.
