The Maori Prisoners.

Efforts are being made in Parliament to get the Te Whiti, Titoko Warn and the other Maori prisoners excepting indulgences such as tobacco, &c., while they are awaiting’trial. If this be done then European prisoners awaiting trial ought to receive the same indulgences. At present all prisoners awaiting trial are treated with the same rigor as convicted felons. The thing is disgraceful. But in any reform it won’t do to indulge the Maoris and leave the Europeans still subject to the existing hardships.
