Wairarapa Literary Institute.

To the Editor of the Standard. Sib, - Aa the annual meeting of the mem« bera of the Institute takes place on Thursday night I should like to bring to the notice of members one or two matters which I hope they will take up ; and I must say I have been greatly pleased by the success of the entertainments got up for the benefit of the Institute. It shows that the people of Greytown are still prond ot it. If it gets into a bad etate it is the fault of the committee. Bat they have done much better these last lew weeks to make np lor previons neglect, so I will say no more on that point. I think, however, it would be wiae of the new committee to resume the monthly meetings aa provided in the bye laws, as it is evident by their meeting about twice a year only they can have no proper control over the affairs. The next matter is, Would it not be well to lower the subscription to what it was formerly, namely IDs per annum ; at that rate we had about 70 to 80 subscribers, and I don’t think I need go into figures to prove that it would be better to have that number of members at 10s than to have only 40 at 15e. There are good libraries at both Carterton and Feathers ton now, and the subscription is only 10a and 7s fid per annum ; unless some'thing is done in this direction Oreytown will ■ot be able to bold its own. The next thing is, How is it that the committee, with Mr H. H. Jackson, has never waited on the Town Lands Trust as it was arranged they should do, to make good their claim to a portion of tbs income of the Trust ? The founders of that Trust have frequently stated both in public and in private that it was founded for the benefit of the school and Institute, therefore I contend it is the duty of the committee to see that the claims of the Institute are recognised. It is true a few pounds have been grudgingly and conditionally promised to aid the funds, but I maintain the Trustees have no right to expect the committee to come on bended knee to ask lor what is their right, especially after the sums of money they have from time to time voted to the Cemetery and Recreation grounds, and the Town Ball. Hoping there will be a large meeting on Thursday night, and that they will take np these questions, I remain, Yours, Ac., A.B.C.
