France and the New Hebrides.

Dubino the past week the action of France with respect to the New Hebrides has caused considerable excitement both in Great Britain and the colonies. Day by day, the cable messages have been of a most sensational character. Franco had sent a man of war to the Islands, troops had been landed, and the French flag hoisted, (Then a British man of war was sent off to the New Hebrides and the aspect of affairs began tulook threatening. The next phase of the business was a denial on the part of France that the flag had been hoisted. The latest cable message is, however, of a pacific character. In the House of Lords, the Earl of Kimberley has stated that Lord Lyons, British Ambassador in Paris, saw M. de Freyoinet, the French Premier, on Thursday last, who stated that he had been informed of the hoisting of the French flag at the New Hebrides; but that he cabled on the previous day to the Governor of New Caledonia instructing him that if the hoisting of the French flag had been effected, it should cease forthwith” This looks like a settling down of all the excitement which has been evinced over the affair.
