Help for the North.

To the Editor of the Standard, Sia, —The letters of “ Sympathy ” and Mr W. S. Wakelin, suggesting that the proceeds from one of our winter entertainments should be devoted towards assisting the sufferers by the late eruptions and earthquakes in the lake district, do much credit to the very kiudly dispositions of those writers. But, Sir, (would it not be well to wait and see if any organisation for such relief is to be formed in Auckland, Napier, or New Plymouth, as these places, being nearer to the scene of the disaster, are better able to judge if there really be any “ urgent need ” for the public to be asked for their assistance ? Should they find it necessary, they could invite the whole colony to co-operate in this labor of love. But for one or two small townships to contribute their mite would not help much, nor materially assist those whom they desire to befriend. A short delay in taking any step in this matter would not curtail additional hardships upon any one, as I have read a telegram sent from Kotorua through the United Press Association, dated June 18th, which says " Plenty of stores are arriving for the needy, but there is no case of real distress existing," I am, Ac., Obsxbvant. June 21,1886.
