Featherston Road Board.

The new members of this Board held a special meeting on Saturday last at the Board’s Office, Featherston. Present—Messrs Monckton, Elgar, Bidwill, Tally, Dowman and Matthews. On the motion of Mr Harris, Mr Tully was elected chairman of the Board. The matter of the loan to the County Council was brought forward. Mr Elgar asked why the County Council wanted money from the Hoad Board. Mr Tully explained that the Roads and Bridges Act had been repealed, and the money was required to complete the MartinborooghFabaua Boad. There was also a sum of money [granted under the late Roads and Bridges Act for expenditure on this road, and it was necessary for the County Council to proceed with the construction of the road, so as to secure this money within a stipulated time. Mr Matthews also explained the position of matters in relation both to the Road Board and Council, but he observed that within the last few weeks the position had been materially changed. He thought a less rate would be struck, and very probably an overdraft required. He thought they should first ascertain what provision the Government intend making within the next six months. Mr Tully said he represented No. 8 Ward on the Board. He was also a member of the County Council. There was no doubt that it was necessary to proceed with the construction of the road. He felt very strongly on the matter, because he had pledged bis word that £350 should be lent to the County Council from his ward, and that would probably tide over the difficulty in the way of obtaining the money voted under the Roads ana Bridges Act. Mr Elgar said he understood that the rates were solely for the maintenance of roads, and not for making such a road as this one in question. Mr Elgar moved That the £3OO from Mr Tully’s ward be advanced to the County Council, but no further sum be advanced by this Board. Seconded by Mr Bidwill and carried. Mr Elgar proposed and Mr Bidwill seconded. That the Board meet every first Saturday in the mouth (as formerly). Carried. Mr Dowman complained of the bend in the road upon Mr McLauchliu’s contract. It was impossible for a wagou to go round. He thought for a small sum the road could be altered. The part he complained of was about halt way up the hill. It was understood that the matter would be submitted to the County Council at its next meeting. The present constitution of the new Board is as follows No 1 Ward, Mr Monckton; Na2, Mr Klgitr ; No 3, Mr Matthews ; No 1, Mr Bidwil ; No 5, Mr Dowutatt; No 6, Mr McDougul; No 7, Mr Harris; No 8, Mr Tully,
