WELLINGTON RACING CLUB AUTUMN MEETING.

The Autumn Meeting of the Wellington Racing Club began Friday afternoon at the Hutt Lark. Fully 500 persons were on the course at 2 o’clock, and the weather was lovely. The black badges worn by the jockeys, bookmakers, and officials in memory of R. H. Vallanee was very conspicuous. Petone Stakes Handicap, of SO sovs ; second horse to receive 10 sovs from the stakes. Nearing the home turn Hermitage got on oven terms with Fay. Then it looked as though the favourite was going to win very easily ; but Fay had a lot left in, and answering gallantly to the challenge, she raced Hermitage into the straight, the pair leaving Tit Bit half a dozen lengths away. A magnificent set-to up the straight resulted. They entered level, but as they came home the mare drew away until, half way up, she had a slight advantage. Hermitage however, passed Fay in the last few strides, and won a grand race by a head. Tit Bit was an indifferent third, Reputation fourth, Bilence fifth, aud Rollo last. Time 2min 4lfa.
