The Devil on the Rimutaka.

STEAM AND SMOKE AND STRONG SULPHUROUS SMELLS.

Last night’s Post contains the following : - A young gentleman who came over the Rimutaka from Featherston yesterday by the old road, informs us that a short distance this side of the spot known as the Devil's Elbow, be noticed a large fissure in the si le of the hill, and from this fissure a cloud of steam and smoke was issuing. The grout d fora considerable distance round was quite wet with the condensed steam, and there was a strong sulphurous smell observable. He also states that on the bill side across the Valley, he noticed several columns of vapour issuing amidst the bush, and apparently steam rather than smoke. Another gentleman yesterday informed us that between the Upper llu'.t and Mungaroa a strong sulphurous smell was perceptible a day or two ago. Some of our scientists should investigate the phenomena.
