The Carterton Paper.

The Wairarapa Observer lias beau prating a great deal <>( late about its big oil eolation. We are told that it is going -bead with “ leaps and bounds " (sometbiug after the the style of Kir Julius Vogel this); that large numbers of extra copies have to be printed, and even then, by the time the sun goes down, not one can be had This would be very gratifying if true, but somehow the people of the Wairarapa smile as they read, and will not believe it. They know that we have offered a half-a-crowu a loud for every subscriber that could be found iu tir«yto »n, Featherstou. and Maryborough, aud as the Observer is not seen iu these townships, except when a few gratis copies are sent, they perceive that its boast is all moonshine. The fact is, the paper in question is going to to the wall fast. Its absurd and ua warrantable attaoke upon private individuals and public servants have called forth a storm of censure; subscribers have sent in their resignations, and advertisers have ordered their advertisements to be taken out, until the Observer itself, notwithstanding its lying statements about its big circulation, complains that " a wretched little clique ” is trying to “ crush ” it. The truth is that the majority of the Carterton shopkeepers are denouncing the paper as a scurrilous and worthless rag, and would be glad to know that it bad retired into the majesty of darkness. We could name a dozen persons who have given orders for their advertisements to be taken out of the Observer, but they are kept in to make a show, and judging by this it is apparent that the sheet is filled with “ dummies." We do not like to speak unkindly, but it is painful to find its editorial columns filled with lying statement* about its circulation, written by one who makes a great profession of truthfulness. He knows the circulation of the Observer is the smallest of all tbe papers in the Wairarapa townships, and that it is seldom seen outside of Carterton, save when a score or so of gratis copies are posted to different persons to make them acquainted with an attack upon this paper or another boast of it* astounding circulation. We apeak plainly, but we speak the troth, and in order to give tbe editor of tbe Observer en opportunity of proving to the pnblio that it has even a *mall circulation, we are authorised to state by a gentleman of Carterton that he will deposit £BO, to be handed over to the proprietor of the Observer if he shall prove eatisfeetorily that be hea a bom fide circulation of thus atmdbid copies. It oar contemporary will not take this challenge up then be mey stmt hia mouth ter ehame, and the pnblie of even hia own township will laugh him to seorn. Wa are of opinion that if the individual who baa made this offer had mentioned half tbe above number tbe money ooold not havq bees claimed,
