Distressing Accident in Wellington.

A very sad accident happened last Thursday afternoon on the South road to a little boy, 3J years of age, son of Mr 0. B. Press, of the Prince of Wales Hotel, Tory street. At about half past two o’clock, says the Post, Mr Press was riding into town from Island Bay, and met his little boy on the road, and placed the lad before him on the saddle. The horse being restive, Mr Press handed his son over to Mr J. P. Sbeile, contractor, who was conveying a load of gravel along the South road, Mr Sheile promising to give the boy a ride home. Mr Press (hen went on ahead, and the little fellow was placed on top of the load of gravel. Mr Sheile was leading the horse, and when coming down an incline it is supposed that a jolt of the dray must have thrown young Press out. At any rate he was not seen to fall, and the accident was only noticed after the wheel had passed over bis abdomen, inflicting most serions internal injuries. The wonder is the body was not cut in two, as the dray contained two tong of metal. Mr Sheile at once picked np the unfortunate lad, who was still conscious, and sent him home in charge of Mr P. Butler, who came np immediately after in a trap. Drs Mahon end Cole were called in at once, and did all they could for the sufferer, but it is doubtful if he can long survive the effects of the accident. Mr Press desires us to state that he is quite satisfied no blame is attachable to Mr Sheile cr anyone. The little boy has siuoe died.
