GRBYTOWN v. MASTERTON VICTORY FOR GREYTOWN.

The above match took place at Masterton on Saturday last on an exceedingly hard wicket, and resulted in a win for Greytown by one run and seven wickets to fall. Masterton batted first (sending five new faces to the wicket) but none of the team got into double figures, Whatman being highest scorer with 6, O’Connor coming next with 5. Hud it not been for O’Connor Masterton would not have made a do7,en runs ; ho went in when the score stood at about 8, and was not put out till 35 appeared on tire scoring book, caused by his spirited backing up. W. Judd for Greytown bowled exceedingly well, B‘wickets for 10 runs, Cuff 1, for 2; Rutherford took a very smart catch at third man ; Masterton’s innings closed for 35, IS by extras. On the Greytown side (first innings) Knell played very steadily for his 14, W. Judd contributed 14 also, by some free hitting; Rutherford coming next with 8, total 55, 10 of which wore extras. McKenzie took most wickets 5; Beechey (their best bowler )4 ; Perry, 1. In their second innings Masterton put together 31 ; Perry a carefully played 8, and Hare 7, being high scorers. In this innings Cuff trundled the leather in good form, getting fi wickets for 17 runs. J. Judd, who was unplayable, 3 for 1, W. Judd 1 for 13, ha making a lino onehanded catch off his own bowling in this innings. This left Greytown 12 runs to win, which they did with the loss of three wickets, Udy placing 7 to his credit, and not out. The fielding of Greytown was very loose in one or two instances, through overthrowing. The fielding of both teams, however,was very fair, considering the bumpy nature of the ground. O’Connor helped his side mich by his wicket keeping, Udy doing the same for Greytown in a like capacity. Hawke for Greytown, and Sleeman for Masterton longstopped well. W. Udy umpired for Greytown. Mr Buttle, during the second innings of the game, filling the same post for the home team. Hawke captained the visitors, and McKenzie Masterton.
