Matarawa Sawmills.

Messrs Udy and Gallon have just got their tramway down Moffatt's road completed, and tliey can now transmit their timber to tbe railway station in a more expeditious and convenient manner. Now that this acquisition is an accomplished fact these mills will soon rank with the most important in the Wairarapa Valley. Messrs Udy and Gallon have taken a large contract for the supply of white pine boards, to be shipped to New South Wales for fruit boxes, jam cases and many other purposes. Our reporter was informed by Mr Udy that the Australian timber is too hard for this purpose, and hence the requisition for our white piue. White piue, as a rule, has been, in many places, a drug upon the timber market, consequently this must be to the timber industry quite a redeeming feature; and proves the fact that everything in the way of colonial timber can be utilised with advantage. Mr Wakelin, of Greytown, has already executed some good orders for these boards, which are cut, in some cases, to about the ordinary size of a jam case, fruit box, flutter box, soap box Ac , sides, bottoms, and lids proportionately. These boards after being branded and numbered are shipped to their destinations in their respective sections and only require to be fastened together upon reaching the consignees. Wo are glad to note that by this particular enterprise much while pine timber which was formerly cither wasted or sold as an inferior class, at a much reduced rate, can now command a docent price and give a much better remuneration to the producer for his labour, which in every case is not light, from bush falling to even loading the railway trucks, for transmission. No doubt for some years to come, the timber industry in the W'airarnpa will be one of the staple pursuits, and create a large demand for labor, It is satisfactory to know that in no portion of the district is the timber trade at all languishing, hut at the present time, thanks to the enterprise and good management of those most directly interested, much vigor is being infused into tiro trade. In referring to Messrs Udy and Gallon’s particular establishment, it may ho noticed that some excellent touguud and groove! match lining and floor boards have been recently despatched to Wellington. Now that iho heavy timber waggons have ceased running down Moffatt’s Line, wu were told that the Load Board will shortly pay the required attention to the repairs of this said road. Such repairs are sadly needed.
