Greytown Borough Council

This Council met at tho Borough Chambers, last nicht. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Cts Loasby, St George, Maxton, Cameron, Gallagher and Kimberly. The report of the Works Committee (by which it was shown that the Borough Inspector was instructed to put in a culvert on Cross’s line) was read and confirmed. The report of the Finance Committee was read and adopted. This report showed that the sum of Lls 10s had been received for the three emigrants cottages disposed of—two to Mr H. Trotman and one to Mr O'Connor.

Tho ranger’s report was read, showing that 17 head of cattle had been impounded dating tho last month; he also reported that tho Wiliugtou Trust and Loan Compnnv hj d not yet fenced in section 57, fronting on the Main street. It was reported by tho clerk that the Masonic body had recently purchased tho section in question, and would pi.M.ihiy fence the same shortly. Tho Clerk, in reply to Crs Loaeby’s mol ion calling for a return of all fees received 1 y the nonn.lUflerwr ‘J;- nc i a i y(ftr) reported that such lees amounted to Ll2 Us 9d.

Cr Loasby said the Council was required to keep the pound iu repair, and unless tba poundkeeper’s fees were curtailed they would have no funds for the purpose. The poundkeeper got a fee of ‘2s 6d for writing each notice, and a nominal sum besides for korp. ing the pound would go to the Corporation to recoup them any ’oss they may incur. If this arrangement could not be made, he thought the only way would be to instruct the ranger and constable to sue all persons allowing horses or cattle to wander within the precincts of the borough. He moved, “ That the poundkeeper be offered the sum Of L2 per year; also, all fees for giving notice the general poundage fees to go to tie borough.”

Cr Kimberly was under the impression that, n lieu of reducing the poundkeeper’s salary, they had better abolish the pound and see persons allowing cattle to stray.

A Councillor remarked that the lav roqun < I a pound in the Bnr< ugh. Cr Kimberly said it that was the ease, lie would see nd CrL“ a'n'.s «.o!i"n. which upon being put to the council was carried. It was arranged to held sale days fp r cattle &c., on the 2nd and lust .‘■’a'urdays m the month.

At the urgent request of the Mayor and councillors, Cr Kimberly consented to withdraw bis resignation. Ee Pound Board, Cr Loasby said be would move to ask tbo Peatherston Town Board if they had received n tender tor writing the first and second schedules of the Poundage Act on the pound notice board, and if they bad not received such tender, to ask them whether they would combine with this Council to get prices for the work to bo done in Wellington; upon the suggestion o! other Cr-, Cr Loa-by added to bis proposition that Mr Chisholm also be asked to give a price for the work. Seconded by Cr Gallagher and carried. On the motion of Cr Loasby. the resolution that one shilling in the £ be levied on all rateable property in tbo Borough, and the Elver Board, was confirmed. The Mayor said that it had been suggested to divide the Borough into four wards, each ward to be enabled to spend its own moiety on improvements and repairs, and if any particular ward required more than its allotted share, to bo allowed to borrow temporarily from the other wards. He said his opinion was, that it was not fair for ratepayers to contribute to the rates fund and not get a share of the money spent. Cr Loasby suggested that three wards would bo ample. After some discussion as to the most convenient time for the works committee to meet in future and several accounts having been passed for payment, the Council adjourned.
