A Cheese Factory Convention.
Many of the settlers in the Wairarapa are materially interested in the cheese manufacturing industry, and it is therefore highly necessary that they should he informed of what is being done with respect to it in other parts of the colony. Recently a cheese factory convention was held at Hamil ton in the Waikato, at which delegates representing the five factories in that district were present. Mr Seddau, who represented the Waikato Factory, occupied the chair, and .stated that the directors of the 'Waikato Cheese Factory had found an increasing difficulty in the management of the concern, owing to the fact that the directors of the other factories did not act in unison with them and with one another. There was an increasing difficulty in making remunerative sales of cheese—one factory cutting under the other. This and other reasons had rendered united action of the several factories necessary. The objects for which the Convention was held were, first, to secure a reduction of cost of freight by land and sea ; secondly, to decide on the best external market ; thirdly, to take steps towards getting a reduction of import duties on cheese in other colonies ; fourthly, to consider the best means of packing the cheese ; fifthly, the establishment of a cheese and butter box manufactory ; and, sixthly, to frame a uniform style of balance sheet for all the factory companies, so as to enable the public and shareholders to compare the working of one factory with anothci. ft was resolved that an association be formed, to be called Hie Waikato Dairy Association, to consist of me delegates of flic various factories, for the purpose of watching and promoting the com - mon interests of the dairy industry. A very interesting discussion on various subjects connected with the cheese manufacturing industry followed, and it was ultimately resolved to fix a price for cheese per 11), below which no factory belonging to : V.> Association should soil uithri m-
