Featherston Affairs.
In the Editor of the Standard.
Sir, — Pour correspondents “ AntiHumbug,” “ Fiat Lux ” and “ Fiat Justitia” through their correspondence in your paper, have no doubt done a certain amount of good, by drawing attention to several lapses of the Featherston Town Board. That of “ Fiat Justitia ” has already done so, as 1 hear it rumored ou very good authority, that our rate is to be reduced to 4d. Verily, wonders will never cease. They tender us bread where a stone was asked for ; lot us also hope that " Anti-Humbug's ” last letter will also bear fruit, by the appointment of a Health Officer. But does ho not think it would havo been far better bad he remained on the Board, and not, like the garrulous dame of old, retired because be could not have all Ids own way, as well as the last word. His energy and experience just now would have been of inestim - able yalue, in strengthening the hands of Councillors. However, I go with him heart and baud, and consider a Health Officer, as an Inspector of Nuisances a necessity ; but let us havo a man who will do his duty fearlessly, without fear or favor, and servo Councillors tho same way as he would the poorest ratepayer ; not like the last official who held that office, and used it for the purpose of venting petty spite and injuring those who thwarted him in any way. It rests, however, in a great measure with the people themselves, and I have no hesitation in saying that had only common cleanliness been observed, and filth, slops, Ac., not been thrown about the back doors and wells, festering, rotting and poisoning the atmosphere, this visitation of diptheria would never have been known hero. However, as everybody is now fairly aroused to tho danger, let us hope we have heard the last of this dreadful scourge, O MICK A.
