MASTERTON.
From oar Own Correspondent. Nov. 80th! Different places in the Wairarapa are noted for different characteristics. Thus, Featherston is famous for hospitality, Greytown for unity and concord, and Carterton for civility. I only wish to say a few words about the latter place at present, lire Masterton Christys recently gave a performance in the Town Hall and sent down two people to make all ready. On arrival of the latter they applied for the key of the Hall, and received the following civil reply from the person in charge: “ I want my money (naming the sum charged for Hal) 'first, before I give you the key.” The Powell troupe troupe also spoke very highly of their treatment at the some place, stating they never before experienced such civility, and didn't want to again. Surely onr Carterton friends might enforce their rules in a gentlmanly manner and language.
“Bi'ik, Bi nk, Rink" wiw the heading of an announcement in the Joc.il paper*, concerning the opening of the elating rink in Maeterton yeeter evening. Some evil-dis-posed person suggested the addition of the letter I) to the heading, but he wae left to hia own D vices. Aa soon aa operation* commenced in the Hall there was a goodly master of visitors, A lew ladies were visible in the gallery (reserved), and they seemed to enjoy the fun very much. The skaters wen of every size and well assorted, but the tailing arrangements were not so perfect, aa sometimes the smallest went first and had a large one gracefully reposing on his—waistcoat. One skater seemed to have a ‘ down* on the moveable steps at theend of the stage, judging by the number of times he rushed at and went down over them. Another appeared to be wildly signalling to some in* visible person, and some wen as though they had partaken of a heavy meal of galvanic batteries which they could not digest. However, they unproved as time won on, several even gaining a proficeucy in gliding along. I most not forget one tniug though, «ml tint waa attempts msde by one or two to imitate the manner of girls sliding on ice, which wac rather amusing aa the propelling foot eenmid desirous of proceeding in an opposite direction to the other foot. Seats wen upon the stage for ladies, in a very com fortsole manner, but, alas, they wen unoccupied, however, when the arrangements become known doubtless many of the fair sex will grace the Hall with their presence. The forthcoming celebration at the Teuera Bridge will be a really grand affair, and will no doubt attract a large number of visitors from all parts. An address will be presented to Miss Bee thorn at the Bridge, and for the Bail in the evening, a special programme, printed upon white satin, will be presented to the scme lady.
