MASTERTON HIGHWAY BOARD.

A KKEirao of the Board was held on Saturday last.

Present: Messrs Vallanoe(chairman),Bennett, Buchanan, andAlpass. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

The following correspondence was also read; —

Letter from M. Driscoll, stating that the ratepayers in No 4 Ward declined to pay the sum promised by them to assist in repairing the line to Wainuioru until the Board had erected several culverts. One from C. C. Hood asking the Board to allow the men now employed in No. 1 Ward to do something to the road between his homestead and woolshed. One from Mr Bunny relative to Mr Baird laying off a line of road through the Aknra block and stating that the whole of the vote of £I,OOO had been expended on the Upper Taueru line, and that there were therefore no funds out of which he could comply with the wishes of the Boati; also one as to the gazetting of the names of Messrs Bennett and Chalmers as Wardens for Nos 6 and 6 Ward, and with respect to the valuation required by the Bating Act. One from the Resident Magistrate enclosing one from Kingi Ngatnere, Ani Beta, and a number of other natives, protesting against the line of road from Masterton to Tupnrupura being carried through their lands. The engineer’s report was given in and read.

Mr Tuck waited on the Board and requested that a piece of bush might be Men and a bridge and several culverts erected on the Opaki and Bangituman line of road. Mr Woodroffe also attended relative to the road at Manaia, across which Mr Griffin had erected a fence.

Thar Mowing resolutions were then passed;—

That tiie Secretary write to Mr Hood and inform him that if the persons whom he says use the road on which he requested a sum of money might be expended will forward apetition to the Board, imUng that it might be improved, they may possibly grant a sum for that purpose—That if Mr Tuck will be at the expense of falling the bush on the Opaki and Bangituman line, and Mr Hare furnish £2O worth of dressed timber, the Board will erect the bridge and culverts required.—That the Secretary write to Mr Bunny and inform him that the Board have learned that the sum of £2OO had been put upon the estimates for making and repairing the Upper Taueru line of road, and ascertain whether the Government intend to carryout the work themselves or will hand over the sum to the Board that they may carry it out.—That M. Driscoll be informed that all the work applied for by him had been completed on the Wainnioru line, and that if the amount promised bv him and other settlers is not at onoe paid to the Board no further work will be undertaken by them.— That as Mr Giles Chamberlain refuses to accept the sum offered by the Board for metal taken from his property, he be informed that they have appointed Mr Henry Bannister as arbitrator in the matter, and ask him to appoint some one on his behalf, so that the matter be settled at once.—That the Secretary write to Mr Kelleher and get what information he can afford as to the line of rood now in dispute between Messrs Woodroffe and Griffin. Fairbrother, account for timber, Ac .. 118 10 Basmusen & Lane, balance contract, No 6 Ward .. .. 80 10 6 The next meeting was appointed to be held on Saturday, the 9th December, at 2 o’clock p.m., to consider the acts recently come into operation.
