PIONEERS OF FLYING
MODEKX KXPIiItIMENTEKS. The pioneer's of flying took to the air in oalloons and gliders. Modern experimenters' are going back to them. In 1783 the Montgolfier brothers made a balloon which was lifted by hot air, and the other day an Austrian inventor rose 2500 feet in a balloon filled with air kept hot by means of an oil-burning apparatus in the gondola. The present-day trend toward gliders has taken a remarkable step forward by the Russian experiments with aerial trains-—gliders towed by aeropiaaes. The latest development is a big passenger glider built in Moscow; with armchairs' for five and a seat for the pilot. It is just like an ordinary air-liner except that it has no engine; When it is cast adrift from the towing machine it will glide down to its destination, while the rest of the train flies on.
