SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

The many friends will be pleased to hear that Mrs J. G. B. Gifford, after a very serious illness necessiatating an operation, is now making progress towards recovery. Inquiry this morning shows that her condition is as good as could be expected, and though recovery will be tardy the operation was quite successful.

A pleasing ceremony took place at the last monthly meeting of the Ngahape branch of the League of Mothers, when, in the presence of a large attendance of members, a presentation was made to Mrs G. MoncrieffWright on the eve of her departure from the district. Mrs John Andrews, as the oldest settler* in the locality, in presenting Mrs Wright with a volume, handsomely bound, said that that lady had been one of the foundation members of the branch, with which she had been prominently identified right through its period of existence, not only as a most enthusiastic member, but also as an indefatigable secretary for two years. She asked Mrs Wright to accept the little gift to mark their appreciation of her efforts on behalf of the branch, as a memento of the esteem and regard in which she was held not only by the members but by all residents of the district, and as a token of their good wishes for the future. Mrs Weight appropriately acknowledged the presentation and reciprocated the good wishes expressed.
