THE RUAWARO MURDER

TRIAL OF WM. BAYLY COMMENCES. JURORS VISIT THE LOCALITY. As was expected, there were scenes of the greatest interest among the general public when the trial opened at Auckland Supreme Court yesterday of William Alfred Bayly, farmeg;, aged 28, on charges of murdering Samuel Pender Lakey, and his wife Christabel Lakey, at Ruawaro on October 15th last year. Alter the jury had been empanelled it was announced that jurymen would be taken to Ruawaro to view the locality, and the Court therefore adjourned after formalities had been completed, until this morning. During the afternoon the jury, escorted by numerous police officers, was motored to Ruawaro, and back again to the city. Bayley is being defended by Messrs Northcroft and Leary, and the Crown Prosecutor, Mi* Meredith, is conducting the prosecution, with the assistance of Mr McCarthy. The presiding judge is Mr Justice Herdman. The Crown Prosecutor is expected to open his address this morning.
