CLEMATIS FAILURES.

A COMMON CAUSE. The commonest cause of unsatisfactory results with clematis is that of insufficient root depth. If your plants are looking sickly it is ten chances to one that the site was not properly dug in the first place. The only remedy is to lift the plant and dig the soil to a depth of quite 2ft. Old manure should be mixed with the lower spit and some leafmould with the upper layer, while old mortar rubble should be worked in throughout the whole site. Before replanting, gently unravel the roots of the plant and cut back the top-growth. Cover the roots with fine soil and tread this firm around and above them. The cut stems should then be surrounded by a circle of wire netting about 18in. deep, and secured by three or four sticks. The reason for this is that the young new stems are very brittle and they will need some protection if breakage is to be avoided.
