SCOUT NOTES

(By “White Paw.”) Last Saturday two members of the Te Awamutu group rode over to Hamilton to attend a series of lectures on “Cubbing,” delivered by Akela-leader Cotter. The outward journey proved an exciting lesson to “Sona,” who was unused to pedalling on anything but bitumen. We arrived in Hamilton after 1 hour 50 minutes ride and a couple of spills. It anyone should want a description of the first spill they can ask any passenger on the 11.30 Te AwamutuHaruilton bus, for they received a grandstand view of this event. After collecting- our suitcase from the busdepot we headed for a relation’s home and dinner. We were met by “Blue Smoke,” a brother Scout, and conducted to St. George’s Troop Hall. Mr Lewis, whose jungle name is Wantolla, received us and presented us to our respective six. The first session had just started so we had not missed much. The afternoon was spent taking down notes, _ jungle dances and games. We dismissed at 5.30 p.m., with instructions to attend a campfire evening at Wantolla’s home, starting at 7.30 p.m. I was billetted by “Blue Smoke.” When we arrived at Wantolla’s we found a pile of dishes sadly in need of a wash. After 10 minutes’ washing and drying we adjourned to the sitting room. The evening was opened with the campfire choruses and Grand Howl. Games and songs filled the evening’s programme. Supper came on the scene at 9.45 p.m. and you can take my word for it that we got outside of that bounteous repast like the pack of cubs we were supposed to be. The happy evening was brought to a close at 10.30 with prayers.

The next morning after meeting at St. George’s Hall, we adjourned to the Lake. Wje spent the morning period in talks, another jungle dance and scouting games. Commissioner Allen was invested with the name of Ha-tye. Before dismissal Kim conducted a Scouts’ Own service.

After dinner.; we again met at the hall, and after a series of Maori stick games we received a talk on programme building. At 3.35 p.m. Sona and myself took leave of the pack and prepared ourselves for the homeward journey by partaking of a hearty meal. We left Hamilton at 4.40 p.m. and had proceeded as far as Rukuhia factory when we were picked up by Mr McAlpine. The benefit gained in attending one of these classes is varied and beneficial and I would advise any cubmaster who has the chance to take the advantage.
