PENNY POSTAGE AGAIN
COMMENCEMENT ON JUNE 1. POLICY OF REDUCING COSTS. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Postmaster-General, the, Hon. A. Hamilton, stated to-day that the Government had decided to revert to the system of universal penny postage as from June 1. The necessary details regarding rates would be known to the public throughout New Zealand in the course of the next few days but, generally speaking, ft could be said that the rates in vogue prior to March 1, 1931, with slight exceptions, would be reverted to. Commenting on the reduction topenny postage, the Minisv...jr said this was in accordance with the Governement's desire to reduce costs wherever possible. In doing so, the Government might be sacrificing a. certain amount of revenue, but it Was hoped that the public generally would respond to the action taken and make the fullest possible use of the Post Office service. The Postal Department was owned by the public for conveying mails at the cheapest possible rate, and it was desirable that the Postal Department should continue to be the sole means for conveying mails. The Government felt that the reduction to penny postage would be welcomed by the public as a contribution toward a reduction of costs and the encouragement of business throughout New Zealand. In making this concession it asked the public in return to make fuT use of the postal facilities, and thus enable the charges to continue on the lowest possible basis.
