PROHIBITION. IN AMERICA. , (Contributed.) The monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held last Thursday in the Presbyterian Hall. There was a large attendance of members and friends. The Rev. Raymond Preston gave a most interesting address upon the burning question of prohibition in America. Mr Preston is a world traveller, and a keen observer, and the conclusions he has anwed at were placed befbre the meeting in a most interesting and lucid manner. From the national, social and economic viewpoint, the speaker said, prohibition was one of the grandest things that had come to America, notwithstanding the persistent efforts <of the "Wets" to propagate false reports regarding the great scheme. Mr Preston referred to the press reports tin our papers, and gave instances of the most glaring perversion of facts, with tha object of creating false views over the world. From-the moral viewpoint, the speaker said the benefits of prohibition were innumerable. Tens of thousands of young people had never seen a drunken man, and the standard of living has risen 'irdmensely. The most convincing argument is the opinion of the American people as expressed in the last election, when 41 states out of 48 voted "dry." Such an authority as Mr Henry Ford must carry weight, and he gives his opinion that prohibition is a very 'great success. Mr Preston's Tendering of "The Old Rugged Cross" was much enjoyed, by all. -,.,.,.. ~., Afternoon tea was served." —— i * ———————^——
