TEN ACRE PLAN
DISTRICT CO-OPERATION ASSURED, That the farmers in the locality of Te Awamutu are anxious to co-oper-ate with the Government in the establishment of the ten-acre plan is already indicated by the number of offers submitted to the authorities. Mr G. B. Melrose, resident officer of the Agricultural Department, informs us that quite a number of farmers have offered land in response to the Government's request. Up to the present the majority of the offers have been sent to the department at Wellington. It should be noted that the offers are to be addressed to the resident officer, as, in the event of their going to Wellington they are only referred back for report. The speedier method would be for direct submission of offers to the resident officer. As a matter of fact,, it is anticipated that the Waipa County Council will, at its meeting to-morrow, appoint committees in each riding. These committees, as explained by Mr Cockayne last week, will work in association with the department in assuring the fullest possible success of the plan. It will have been noted that Mr Cockayne specially emphasised the desirability, not merely of finding suitable land, hut of deciding upon a location in which a service in the form of casual labour could be of benefit both to the new settler and the established settlers as well. This is a vital point in the proposals and one which calls for the exercise of a wise judgment in the committees' recommendations.
