OTOROHANGA NEWS
TOPICS OF THE HOUR. ,■'■■. i SCHEME 48. (Our Resident Representative.) The Otorohanga Country Clerk (Mr S. J. Fortescue) furnishes the following interesting particulars:— Since the Ist of October, 1931, 41 contracts, employing 55 men, have been made with the County. All of these have been made with farmers who are doing general improvement work. Under the Scheme 4a the Unemployment Board entered into 322 contracts, of which 156 are operative at present; 136 terminated and 30 not proceeded with. Scheme D was only in operation 24 hours, when the local unemployment committee was advised that" no further commitments were to be entered into under this scheme. All contracts already operating—or definitely arranged for under this scheme are, however, to be allowed to be completed. The original promoters of a proposed rabbit board to serve 60,000 acres in the Otorohanga districts, met here in force yesterday, when animated discussions eventuated. A very strong deputation from the recent meeting waited on yesterday's meeting urging them to cease endeavours to form a rabbit board, but without success, and the meeting carried the folowing resolution: " That this executive committee of the proposed rabbit board ratepayers have decided to continue in their endeavour to form such a board." Individual settlers concerned are working hard both for and against the proposition.
