WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

TE AWAMUTO BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Te Awamutu Women’s Institute was held in the Parish Hall on Friday, 13th May. Mrs Wynyard occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance of members. Mrs Swarbrick continued her readings from Pepy’s Diary. These were very much enjoyed, especially the parts dealing with the, excellent man’s wordrobe and some rather self-revealing confessions. i

The competitions for the afternoon were decided as follows: For the best plate of biscuits Mrs Swarbrick was the winner; for the best bowl of chrysanthemums, Mrs Peake; and the “Old Song Titles” competition was won by Mrs L. R. Kay. Mrs Downes reported that a necessitous case had applied to Auckland for help and suggested that were the institute true to the ideals that were intended to inspire all institutes, namely home-making, co-operation and citizenship, it should not be necessary for such cases to apply for help outside the district. As a result of her appeal a sewing circle was formed to meet every other other Thursday for the purpose of making new clothes for the needy, and attending generally to the wants of such cases. Mrs Jeffery very generously offered her house as a rendezvous to the new circle, an offer which was gratefully accepted, and it was decided to start work on Thursday, May 26th, at 2 p.ni. Some beautiful work was on exhibition for the institute’s stall at the forthcoming Winter Show. It is hoped, however, that members will have a larger collection ready by the end of the month. For the convenience of the ladies who are in charge 5f Te Awamutu’s stall, all articles must be left at Mr Wynyard's office on Saturday, May 28th. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames West, Cruickshank, Weatherell and Goodall.
