THE COMMUNISTS
ALLOWED TOO MUCH LATITUDE. One fact which has clearly emerged from the disgraceful outbreaks of lawlessness in this country is that the Communist element has been largely responsible. The community has now ample reason for demanding that this insidious menace to public order should be dealt with in a manner that will make it impossible for its subversive activities to continue. There are good grounds for believing that those who participated in Communist mischief are mostly of the unemployable class, as distinct from the genuine unemployed, and there should therefore be no difficulty or hesitation about deciding how to deal with them. They are a public nuisance and a danger to society, and hence quite properly can be brought within the scope of the special powers vested in the Government by recent legislation for safeguarding not only the peace and order of the comumnity, but also the lives and property of the citizens. The Government must take up the challenge thrown down by this lawless coterie of sedition-mongers and deal with it promptly and effectively.
