STRIKERS RESUMING

RETURNING TO NORMAL. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. In spite of the strike and rain, about 543 relief workers were busy to-day on various jobs in the city. Under normal conditions about 900 would have been at work, as most of the married men had already completed their allocations for the week. There was no evidence of picketing. Friday is an off day for married men and consequently it is not easy to judge the feeling of the men from to-day’s figures. The strike is still on officially. The Hospital Board has agreed to give relief for one week only to wives and children of men on strike. The Commissioner of Police, Mr W. G. Wohlmann, said to-day that indications were that things were returning to normal. A very satisfactory response had been received to the appeal for more special police from a very excellent type of citizen. 34 MEN BEFORE COURT. Thirty-four men came before Mr E. Page, S.M., in the Police Court to-day on charges arising out of the windowsmashing episode in the city on Tuesday evening, and the Cuba Street gathering which was dispersed after a baton charge by the police on Wednesday afternoon. The charges included .inciting lawlessness, theft, obstruction of constables, being in possession of offensive weapons such as bolts, nuts and stones, resisting the police, wilful damage and obscene language. The Court was crowded and a number of women were among the spectators.

Fines ranging up to £ls were imposed on several, and in other cases decision was reserved or remands granted.
