A romantic story is told by a former American marine named Faustein Wirkus, who has just returned to his home in Pennsylvania (United States). Faustin, although an American, is also a king, his realm being J the island of La Gonava, in the Bay of Hayti. He was assigned to the island some years ago as a marine but made himself so popular among the islanders that they elected him rule over them with their queen. . Another attempt to simplfy the 30,000 ideographs constituting the Chinese written language has been made in the introduction of “ Lieugraphy,” a shorthand system based on phonetics. The inventor, Lieu Hsueh-chun, claims that this new device enables a person to write 180 characters a minute. It is said that anyone knowing the Chinese language can learn it within three months. The Princess of Hohenlohe-Oehrin-gen gave birth to a daughter in the early hours of the morning recently in a sleeping-car on an express train travelling from Silesia to Berlin in order to enter a nursing home, but the child was born when the train was nearing Sorau. A Berlin gynaecologist accompanied the Princess on the train. Both the mother and the baby are well.
