INCREASED PRODUCTION FOR YEAR. New Zealand’s butter exports for the year ended March 31 last amounted to 1,841,245 cwt, ajid were valued at £lO,513,684, as against exports totalling 1,599,407 cwt and valued at £12,022,440 for the preceding twelve months. There was, therefore an increase in quantity of 241,838 cwt, but a decrease in value to the extent of £l,508,756. Cheese exports for the past year amounted to 7,875,380 cwt, and were valued at £5,964,699, compared with 1,618,538 cwt, worth £6,280,213 for the year 1929-30 —an increase of 256,843 cwt, and a decrease of £315,514. In a review of the Dominion’s dairy produce export trade the Department of Industries and Commerce states that in accordance with the usual seasonal experience, the monthly production of butter will from now on show a sharp falling off, but, judging by the returns for the first eight months of the current dairying season, it is confidently expected that a continuance of production on its present basis will enable last year’s record output of dairy production to be exceeded. For the first eight months to March 31 last production had indeed reached a very high level, the quantities of butter and cheese graded being respectively 0.76 per cent and 7.34 per cent in advance of the gradings for the corresponding period o the preceding season. Exports of butter during the first eight months of the current season amounted to 67,558 tons, as against 68,470 tons for the same period of the previous season—a decrease of 912 tons or 1.33 per cent. Exports o v cheese during the respective periods were 64,702 tons and 57,204 tons—an increase of 7498 tons, or 13.11 per cent.
