SPECIAL LIMITS

" Motorists are. people to forget the speed limits set down in the Motor Vehicles Act of 1928, and it is well to remind such motorists of what is expected of them," states the Canterbury Automobile Association in its latest message to motorists. "The extension of the permanent paving system has encouraged forgctfulness of speed limits among many drivers. The pleasure of being able to bowl along mile on mile over concrete or bitumen roads is calculated to lull one into the habit of maintaining high or fairly high speed in all circumstances. The maximum speed set for the open highway is 35 miles, and it should be known that it shall be no defence in any proceedings for an offence that the motor vehicle was being driven at a speed not exceeding the maximum allowed under the regulations. "The speed limit at any place within the limits of any borough or town district is 25 miles an hour, and local authorities are paying careful attention nowadays to the complete observance of such a maximum speed. Between 8 am. and 5 p.m. the maximum speed past any school to which a traffic sign relates is 15 miles an hour The same maximum applies when passing a hospital to which a traffic sign relates, to intersections, when passing any portion of a road undergoing alterations or repairs, or when passing a stationary tram headed in the opposite direction. A speed not exceeding 10 miles an hour must be observed when going through a tunnel such as those near Kaikoura, or when going round a curve or corner if the view is not clear for 40 feet ahead, or when passing a stationary tram making in the same direction when a safety zone is interposed between tram and motor vehicle. "These provisions in the regulations should be learned thoroughly by every motorists who is careful, and they should be faithfully applied at all times."
