RESPECTED SETTLERS HONOURED. A very wellnattended social was held in the Puahue School house on Friday evening, to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Esau Pretty and family, who have been long resident of lh<r~oTistrict and who now are leaving to make a new home elswhere. The function took the form of a card evening, with cribbage and 500. The attendance was representative of the whole district from Hairini right to the far end of Puahue, and Mr W. Cavanagh, president of the Cribbage Club, presided. A very happy evening was spent, and the winners in the cribbage section proved to be Mrs R. Baillie, jun., and Mr F. Morris, while at five hundred Mrs Pretty secured the honours. Consolation awards were made to Miss B. Cavanagh and Mr Johnson. During the supper interval Mr Cavanagh referred to the high esteem in which the guests of the evening were held, and the settlers desired to show their recognition by presenting mementoes of very pleasant associations. On behalf of the Cribbage Club Mr Cavanagh then asked Mr Pretty to accept a solid leather brief bag, "full of hearty good wishes for the future." (Applause.) Mr W. G. Park, then presented Mrs Pretty with a beautiful travelling rug from the settlers of the district, and he assured the recipient that it was intended as a reminder of the very warm regard in which she was held. (Applause.) When the musical honours had been given, Mr Pretty sincerely thanked the settlers for their indication of goodwill. He had thoroughly enjoyed the years spent in the district, and hoped he would not lose touch with the settlers, for they had proved loyal friends always. Mrs Pretty had asked him to voice her sincere thanks, and to say that the gifts would ever be treasured. (Applause.)
