JEWS RETURN TO SPAIN

The first legally recognised synagogue in Spain since the expulsion of the Jews from the country in 1492 has been opened in Madrid. The congregation consists of 30 families, who have organised themselves, with the consent of the Government. An official representative of the Madrid police was present at the opening ceremony (says the correspondent of Reuter at Madrid). He read the terms of the protocol, and the provisional statutes of the congregation, which were then formally signed. Senor Bauer, who is a friend of King Alfonso—his daughter is a lady-in-waiting to the Queen —has been elected president of the synagogue. It is as a result of his personal intervention with the King that the Jewish community has obtained this legal recognition. Despite opposition from the Church a section of the civil cemetery in Seville has been set aside for Jewish burials.
