BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING.

VARIOUS MATTERS DEALT WITH. His Worship the Mayor, Mr C. G. Downes presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council on Monday evening, and also present were Crs. W. J. North, C. A. Finch, A. Brown, J. G. B. Gifford, F. J. Gilbert, H. C. Rainey arid G. Spinley (deputy-Mayor). The town clerk (Nr D. Bockett) and engineer (Nr W. D. R. McCurdie) were in attendance. Cr Gifford asked if it was intended "to complete the improvement work in Brady Street. The surface was very rough. The engineer said it had not been intended to metal it, but he proposed having the old metal rolled in, with perhaps some sand on one of the footpaths. The Mayor said the original intention was to do the earthwork and then leave it for some time to consolidate. Lack of funds prevented metalling and surfacing. When it was stated that it was proposed to-kerb one footpath from the railway crossing to the junction of Pakura Street, Cr North expressed surprise, but it was explained that kerbing was necessary as there is no alternative stock route and a footpath would soon be destroyed by travelling stock. Cr Rainey referred to the work of chipping grass that has grown through the asphalt on some footpaths, and asked if Cr North's offer of a gallon of patent weed poison for demonstration purposes had been availed of.

The engineer said he would give .one of the paths treatment in a few days' time. The Hamilton manager of Dalgety & Co. Ltd., wrote that though somewhat disappointed that the Borough Council could not see its way to make the full concession asked for respecting the rent of the borough saleyards, the firm appreciates very much the assistance that has been given. In another letter the firm offered to pay £1 per x annum as rent of the telephone house at the saleyards. As the other companies have also agreed, the engineer was instructed to erect the desired building. The secretary, Te Awamutu Croquet Club, applied, in conjunction with the Bowling Club, for the erection of additional seats between the two lawns in Victoria Park. This would entail cutting a break in the live hedge, and the seats would be sheltered.

The bowling club advised that it favoured ithe application, provided the shelter is not erected too high. A sub-committee had been appointed to co-operate. The Mayor explained that the request was the outcome of a recent inspection of the Park by himself in conjunction with the Town Clerk and Borough Engineer. He thought the provision would enhance the appearance of the park, and perhaps promote sociability between the two sports, clubs named. To a question, the Mayor said a good deal of money had been expended on improving Albert Pack, ?r.d use:-s of V'ctoria Park should receive similar advantages He could give no estimate of the cost.

The opinion was expressed by councillors that such seats would encourage children and some aduli-.s to walk across the playing areas of both clubs. It was pointed out that the hedge was provided a breakwind, and it served the purpose admirably. It was decided to defer the matter and later the applicants can furnish an estimate of the cost with a sketch of the proposed seating accommodation.

The secretary, Building Regulations Committee, Scientific and Industrial Research Department, wrote that a committee has been appointed to pare a set of model building regulations applicable to the whole of New Zealand.—Received.
