CONCERT AT WAIKERIA
A UNIQUE OFFERING,
On Saturday and Monday evenings last large and enthusiastic audiences travelled to Waik*ria Borstal Institute to be entertained with popular concerts given by the entertainers of the institute. They proved in every respect most enjoyable evenings. Mr Jordan, acting officer in charge, in a few well chosen words expressed his pleasure at seeing so many present.
A most efficient orchestra, under the baton of a midget conductor, whose style and attitude indicated talent equal to the best, gave renderings of “ The Maid at Arms,” “ Carolina,” “If I| Had a Talking Picture of You,” which would please even the most fastidious.
Then came the minstrel troup, who kept the audience in fits of laughter with their original jokes and conundrums. The sketch “ Rhubarb,” was particularly pleasing. We won’t forget for a long time the humour of Sambo and Bones, in the corners, who excelled themselves. Then came the ventriloquist (who, we understand, has just lately developed this wonderful gift), and he, too, showed outstanding ability to entertain.
The Maoris again demonstrated their power in their, usual characteristic manner. Their sketch of the “1169 Express ” was original and laughable. The camp fire scene was an item worthy of the highest commendation, also their “ Canoe Song,” and haka.
The evening was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem and an expression of thanks by a member of the audience. After this the Grande Finale, “ The Broadway Melody,” by the whole company closed an evening which will be long remembered for its clean and wholesome fun.
