FIRE IN A CHURCH
DISCOVERY BEFORE SERVICE. (Bv Telegraph. Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Monday. What appears to be a deliberate attempt to set fire to the Balclutha Presbyterian Church was discovered on Sunday morning. When the caretaker entered the building in preparation for- the morning service he wias met at the door by a cloud of pungent smoke. He thought the whole building was on fire. It was itioon seen, however, that the smoke came from a fire in the pulpit, which was still smouldering. The pulpit had evidently been entered _ by someone during the night. The minister’s chair was almost a charred mass, and a large hole had been burned in the carpet of the pulpit. In a room off the vestry the window curtain was discovered to have been burned, and there were several burned matches lying on the floor.
