FAREWELL SOCIAL

MR BEERE HONOURED AT PIRONGIA. A complimentary smoke social was tendered a few evenings ago- to Mr H. E. Beere, who has sold his farm and •is moving nearer to Te Awamutu. Mr Beere has a,wide circle of friends in this district, of which he is entitled to consider himself an old resident, having settled here with his. parents upward of 25 years ago. Sickness and bad weather prevented a good many from attending the function, but some thirty guests assembled. Mr T. Steel occupied the chair, and his policy of a short toast list and a long musical programme might well be followed by all who favour this form of entertainment. Messrs E. Pooley ( Te Awamutu), Hall, Lowe, Dalzell, Sifleet, Jones, F. Best, and Grace contributed items, the first-named being the life of the party, possessing the combination of a fine voice and a sociable temperament. During the evening Mr Beere was fa presented with a silver cigarette case, ~ and on behalf of his brother, who was unable to be present, received a travelling bag. •In a brief speech Mr Beere thanked his well-wishers for their entertainment, for their expressions of goodwill, and for their gifts. Although leaving* Pirongia, he would see them no doubt quite often, as he intended to keep on with his Pokuru farm. The entertainment was brought to ' a close shortly after midnight with the singing of " Auld Lang Syne.'
