SLAUGHTERMEN’S WAGES
THE POSITION AT GISBORNE. FREE LABOUR AVAILABLE, (By Telegraph. Press Association.) GISBORNE, Friday. It is anticipated that, in common with other district's, trouble may be experienced at Povslrty Bay when the freezing works open. The saughtermen, it is said, having intimated* that they desire a 10 per ceryt increase. This demand followed on the granting o£ an (increase to the ‘shearers, but the position of the two industries is different, for the shearers got their inerdase from the Arbitration Court when their award ran out, while the freezing works award has still nine months to run.
The farmers of this district were apprise!! of the likelihood of trouble some months ago, and, should theslaughtermen or other freezing workers refuse to turn to when the season opens, there will be an ample supply of free labour available. Upt to the present, of course, theire lias been no call for labour, and, a's the works will not open until the end of November, it (is thought unlikely that matters will come to a 'head before then.
The manageis of the freezing works hdre are disinclined to comment on the situation, but all are agreed that there is not the slightest justification for any increase during the present season white farmers are still suffering from the effect of last year’s drought. :
