MANAWATU GORGE SLIPS

NO TRAINS TILL AFTER MONDAY. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., Friday. . . Rain yesterday and last night caused a further big mass of earth in the Manawatu Gorge to become detached and again destroy the clearing work on the railway line, which now will not probably be open until after Mon-, day. This morning a train, conveying wooden chutes and water pipes; arrived on the scene from Palmerston, North. It is proposed to lead water on to the slip and wash the debris down, sluise fashion, in order to release all matter high up on the hill, which continually threatens to nullify the.efforts- of the large working party. DISLOCATED RACE TRAFFIC. . WELLINGTON, - Friday. Minor washouts were caused at three points between Kaiwarra -and Petone by-;the heavy seas in‘ the bar-',' hour last night. Though the railway lines were not affected, the damage was sufficiently serious to necessitate immediate repairs.- Consequently>all: rail traffic had to be switched on one set of rails, greatly hampering the service. The trouble was more noticeable owing to the heavy passenger, traffic owing to the Masterton Racing Club’s meeting at Trentham.
