OTOROHANGA NEWS

ITEMS OF INTEREST. PROPOSED RUGBY SUB-UNION. (Own Correspodent.) Conversing in connection with the proposed Rugby football sub-union, a well-known local football enthusiast said: “I understand that the Maniapoto Rugby sub-union has won the first bout by 8 points to 2. One wonders ho-w this victory wa s obtained, when the meeting before ended in a draw. It appears to me that the Otorohanga sub-union committee is handling th:e affair with kid gloves. It is apparent, after what has happened, that the procedure before suggested of sending a delegate to the parent body will, have ta be adopted The parent body should have the whole position placed before it, and the manner'in which it has been handled by the Maniapoto sub-union particularly explained. I hear that one of the Otorohanga delegates was at a loss for words to speak to his own motion. I wonder why! That bone of contention, the Power Board club, requires discussion, the Board’s delegate having voted against the propsed sub-union. It seems neither fair nor playing, the game for a team which is here to-day end gone to-morrow, and oame into being only this season, to vote against what the old-dstablished teams in this district consider to be for the benefit of football. However, as the delegate referred to is an ardient Te Kuilti man, his action is not to be wondered at. The Otorohanga sub-union committee will not be downcast at its defeat, seeing the way it was obtained. It has the backing of (the whole district, and, it is hoped the committee will box on, using every means in its power, even if it entails shouting for all.hands!” There was a meeting of the executive of the proposed O'torolianga subuuion on Tuesday night, hut what was done I have no’t heard, the secretary (Mr Trapski) informing me that he had nothing to report as to what took place. The Otorohanga Town Band is preparing a concert programme, and will give a performance in aid of its funds on a near future date. . The Band intends entering a quartette in ithe band contest to be held in Wellington, and Mr C. Sass will probably compete in the double-bass solo competition. Mrs A. E. Cooke, who hats been musical directress to Ithe Otorohanga Amateur Operatic Society since its inception, has, owing to various reasons (the main one being that of ill-health), resigned the position. The committee of management recognised thalt Mrs Cooke’s resignation was a misfortune, and asked her to .re-consider her resignation, but without avail. When it is realised- that Mrs Cooke was virtually the inceptress of the Society, and has done yeoman .service in connection wilth the several operas produced, it will be understood that the loss sustained by our local musical society is a heavy one. Mrs A. Bell has consented to take the piano for the rehearsals of the chorus work of the opera, “The Sorcerer,” which it is proposed to stage shortly. The question of State control of the dairying industry has exercised the minds of the dairy farmers for some time, and there 'has been divergence of opinion in regard to the same. The dairy farmers of this district appear to have just awakened to the fact that the question is one which they should have actively interested themselves in a s a body and studied its many sides. This being the off-season ate far as dairying is concerned, the farmers have found time to inquire into the position, and have welcomed the news that there are likely 'to be addresses on the subject given Mr Mr Vieitch, Nationalist member for Wanganui, in Te Awamutu and Hamilton. From these addresses the farmers hope to more fully understand the arguments urged against absolute State control of the dairying industry. It .has been rumoured that Mr Veitch would, speak in Te Awam.utu on Saturday next, buit as a matter of fact the date has not yet been definitely decided upon, but when it is fixed 'there is certain to he a large number of our district farmers at the meeting. Owing to the continued prevalence of influenza it has been deckledi 'to postpone the Agricultural and Pastoral -Asteociati-on’s dance, which was to have taken place at Otorohanga next week. The golf teams to represent Otorohanga at Te Awamutu next Saturday will be chosen from the following: Ladies: Mrs McLeod,, Misls Hobson, Mrs Hill, Mrs .Smith, Miss Lawson, and Miss Barker. Men: Messrs Raven. A. Fleming, Griffiths, Bedlington, Smith, Fortelscue, Matheson, Ellis, Morton, Harty, Cox. Selbie, and Morley.
