DRILL DEFAULTERS
HEAVY FINES INFLICTED. (By Telegraph. Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Wednesday. .This morning a small number of Cadets and Territorials were before the Police Court on charges under the Defence Act. For failing to attend drill, A. G. M. Callender was fined £5 and costs, and Robert Sheddon and W. M. Edmonds each 40s, while John James Reed was mulcted a fine of £1 and costs. R. A. Kingsbeer appeared on two charges under the Act. It was stated by a sergeant-major that Kingsbeer had notified that he was going to Mangaweka, and gave an address, which later was found to be fictitious. Mangaweka was on the non-effective training area list, and there was no doubt that accused had deliberately intended to evade drill as five days after he gave the address at Mangaweka he was found to be on the pay-sheet of thr Auckland Meat Company. He had a bad record. Kingsbeer told the magistrate that he had drilled at Palmerston North. Mr Hunt: You dodged while others drilled. How much do you earn? — Four pounds per week. Well, you will be fined £4 on one charge and £2 on the other.
