WORK IN THE BOROUGH

PROGRESS IN TE AWAMUTU, ENGINEER’S REPORT TO BOROUGH COUNCIL. The following report by th e borough engineer (Mr W. R. D. McCurdie), presented to the works committee meeting last week, was adopted at Monday’s meeting of the T e Awamutu Borough Council: — J Mr Daurie proposes building on hisJ area fronting Goodfellow Street. AS the proposed site for the house is soma distance from the sewer the course or the propsed drain has been levelled, an dMr Laurie informed: that his building site can be efficiently served. Only one tender (Mr Patterson’s) for the supply of ten pairs of blucher boots for the fire brigade was received. The matter is dealt with in a separate minute. A black collie dog was killed by a motor car in Sloane Street at about 8.30 o’clock on 'the morning of 'Friday, 2nd July. As tbe owner was not known, thfe dog was ,fenoved Jand buried at the cost of the Council. Miss Lawry is proceeding with preparations to build on lot 18. Henderson’s Isub-division. No connecting sewerage eye was left in the sewer, as shown on the plan. Authority to break the sewer is required, so that a connection can be made when Miss Lawry asks for it. The County Council has erected a shed on the county allotment fronting Daphne Street, n'ear the main septic tank. This is the fiffst building in the sub-division, and is an indication of the growth of the town in that locality. The gateway crossing from Sloane Street into the post office has been laid in asphalt at the cost of the users, that is, the Postal Department. Openings made 'by the Telegraph Department for the laying of underground wires have been asphalted, also at the cofet of that Department. Opportunity has been taken to mend hrolten pieces in the asphalt on the footways in Alexandra Street at 'the same time.

A survey was made of lot 2, Alexandra Street, opposite College Street, for a proposed building on skids to be erected by Miss Irwin. The building complies wtih the by-laws except that it was proposed to be erected less than 15 feet from the ‘hen-houfee. This error has been corrected, and tbe building may now be gone on with.

In furtherance to the Council’s resolution that parking notices ‘be placed immediately for the guidance of motorists, especially in the matter of preventing the standing of cars near corners and causing accidents by obstructing bhie view, a supply of notice pillars is being ordered. These will cost £2 2s each in Hamilton. The painting and lettering will be done in Te Awamutu, and Will cdst about 10s each. If made in Te A'wamutu with a base of heavy malleable iron the cost of the pillars might be less. Messrs Pomeroy and Company are making one as a sample, and will have it retidy shortly.—The matter was .referred back to the works committee for further review.
