THE MAYOR'S SUCCESS
M'yfiW STREETS LOAN. MONEY WILL BE AVAILABLE. Cr C. G. Downes, chairman of the Borough Council's Finance Committee, yesterday received a telegram from the Mayor, who went to Wellington to try and negotiate the £15,000 balance of the streets improvement loan, that he had been successful in arranging same with the A.M:P. .Society at 51 per cent.
The foregoing assurance is distinctly pleasing, especially in view of the fact that practically the whole of the borough streets staff had been thrown out of employment at this season of the year. Just when the money referred to will be available is not stated, but we advance the opinion that so soon as the necessary formalities have been complied with the Bank of New Zealand will advance sufficient money to enable all, or most, of the men to be re-employed. This will also mean that the generous action of the borough engineer in applying for three months' leave of absence without pay will not now have to be availed of.
