THE BOROUGH ENGINEER

APPLIES FOR EXTENDED LEAVE.

“ A very fine spirit ” was the comment of a councillor at last night’s meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council when the following letter was read:—

The borough engineer (Mr W. D. R. iMcCurdie) wrote: “In view of the borough’s present financial position, and the regrettable fact that my men are all throtvii on to the unemployment list, I beg that the Council will grant me leave of absence without pay as from 30th June to 30th September of this year, with further extension should such be necessarj-. Any matter that may seem to need attention in the meantime will be gladly attended to without compensation.” Cr Jeffery moved that the leave he granted. He thought a letter of appreciation should |be sent to Mr MoCurdie. Cr Montefiore said he had. very much pleasure in seconding the motion. He a'd,mired the engineer for his thoughtful consideration.

Cr Downes suggested that if the loan money became available the engineer be asked to resume duty at an earlier' date than 30th September, if necessary. i

Leave of absence was granted unanimously, and the engineer is to be written to expressing the Council’s thanks. ’ It was mentioned that theaction would) save the borough well over £IOO.
