TOO MANY DEER
OPEN SEASON NEXT YEAR
(By Telegraph. —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day.
To curb the increasing number of deer in New Zealand and check the damage done by these animals to forests and pastures, the Government has decided to remove protection except on moose and wapiti at the close of the next deer stalking season, unless it can be shown by acclimatisation societies that they are adequately coping with the nuisance. It is suggested to societies that they should expend all moneys from deer and opossum licenses in thinning out the deer. Payment' of bonuses in districts where protection has already been removed will be continued.
