GERMAN-MADE HISTORY

A Berlin newspaper gives some remarkable extracts from the schoolbooks of Republican Germany. One of these extraordinary volumes— they are all of course, official publications, say s the Daily Chronicle—"teaches the young idea" that "William 11. has ruled over our land since 1888. » After 'him, the Crown Prince, his son, will reign." The date of publication on the title-page of the book is—l92s! In another 1925 schoolbook a poem is included, which calls upon the scholar never to allow the hosts of the enemies of Germany to make him afraid, because "above you soars the Prussian eagle. The noise of his wings is heard by all the globe; to his voice all the peoples of the world listen." Then, in yet another schoolbook, we are told how the war came about: "Frankly and honourably, Germany sought an understanding and peace with her English cousin, but her efforts were of no ayail, England's commercial jealousy was too great. Under the pretence of protecting the neutrality of Belgium, England declared war on Germany on August 4th, 1914." The previous violation of the neutrality of Belgium by Germany is an historic fact, not, apparently, worth mention. ■ This volume is also dated 1925. The Republican education authorities appear, indeed, to regard facts in general as being worthy of just as little consideration as the existence of the Republic in particular.
