THE SMART ALICK

(Contributed). iWhen a man cannot attain distinction by 'his merits he tries to stand on his head and click his heels. There are all sorts of ways of getting notoriety. There are many indecent ways, but few decent ones. . There are some minds that think they are doubtless superior in intelligence when they learn how to find fault or when they discover faults in anything that is usually respected. The love of notoriety is a strong liquor and leads people into all sorts of extravagances. There are many criminals who will resort to anything to get into the spotlight and on the first page. It is easy enough to achieve notoriety. You have been behaving yourself all your life and nobody has paid any attention to .you. But if you start out beating your 'wife and kicking your children around, there will be a hulaboo immediately and you will attract notice. True fame is the shadow of true stature. False fame is the shadow without the stature. A desire to be spectacular and attract attention is one that should be thoroughly criticised. It can easily lead a man into doing something foolish as well as inspire him to do something worth while.
